550 Bands, 19 Shows: The Live Music Gap in Florida Metal's 2026 Numbers
As of 2026-08-08, Florida Metal Index indexes 550 bands across the state — but only 19 upcoming shows. That ratio, roughly 29 bands for every scheduled performance, is the single most striking number in our current dataset. Florida's metal scene is deep on paper. It is thin on stages, at least for the moment.
The Band-to-Show Gap
Tampa is the clearest example of the disconnect. It's the largest hub in our index by a wide margin, with 105 bands — nearly double the next-closest city. Yet Tampa currently has just 4 upcoming shows logged. Orlando, with roughly half of Tampa's band count at 57, actually has more shows on the books: 5. That makes Orlando the busiest city in our show calendar right now, despite trailing Tampa badly in raw band totals.
Miami (44 bands) and Jacksonville (27 bands) — the third- and fourth-largest scenes by band count — currently show zero upcoming dates in our index. Gainesville, Tallahassee, Ocala, and Sarasota, which together account for 53 bands, also show zero. Only Fort Lauderdale (22 bands, 1 show) and Pensacola (9 bands, 1 show) crack the board outside Tampa and Orlando.
Add it up: the ten cities with the most bands account for 317 of the state's 550 acts, but only 11 of the 19 total shows we track. The remaining 8 shows are happening somewhere outside Florida's traditional metal strongholds — a reminder that our show data reflects a snapshot in time, not a full accounting of the state's live calendar, and that gig booking cycles don't move in lockstep with band formation.

Across the full state, our index tracks 64 venues capable of hosting these acts. With 550 bands competing for stage time at 64 rooms, the math on any given week naturally favors a small number of shows clearing the calendar at once — but a 19-show pipeline against a 550-band roster suggests most of Florida's metal bands are, at this moment, between bookings rather than on a run of dates.
Death Metal Still Owns the State
Genre data confirms what most people already assume about Florida: this is death metal territory, and it isn't close. Of the 550 bands in our index, 213 are tagged Death Metal bands — 38.7% of the entire roster. The next-largest genre, Black Metal bands, sits at 105, followed by Thrash Metal bands at 98. Death metal alone outnumbers black metal and thrash combined by 10 bands.

Doom Metal and Progressive Metal are tied at 52 bands each, a coincidence worth noting since the two genres rarely overlap stylistically but apparently draw equal numbers of practitioners in Florida. Metalcore, often associated with the state's more commercially visible export acts, ranks a modest 8th at 33 bands — smaller than either doom or prog, and well behind the state's death metal core.
The Newest Arrivals
Our index also tracks band formation years, and five acts are logged as forming in 2026 itself: CarlyMetal, Carnaby Christ, Cryptsword, Microcephaly, and Revelation. All five are the newest entries in a 550-band index, meaning that even in a scene this saturated with death metal, new acts are still forming and getting tracked in real time. Whether any of these bands turn up on future show listings is something we'll be watching.
What the Numbers Suggest
Taken together, the data paints a scene that is broad but currently under-scheduled. Florida supports 550 bands across 64 venues and at least 10 genres with double-digit representation, yet only 19 shows are visible in our upcoming listings, concentrated disproportionately in Orlando and Tampa rather than distributed across the state's other major band hubs. Miami and Jacksonville, despite ranking third and fourth in total bands, currently show no upcoming dates in our system. That's not necessarily a sign of scene decline — booking data is inherently time-sensitive and show calendars fill in unevenly — but it is a real gap between where Florida's metal bands live and where they're currently playing.

Figures reflect 550 total bands, 19 total upcoming shows, and 64 total venues indexed at the time of writing. Genre and city counts are drawn directly from band records in our system; show counts reflect currently scheduled, upcoming listings only and will change as new dates are added. No external or third-party data sources were used in this report.
