213 Bands, 83% on Bandcamp, Zero Shows Logged: The Data on Florida's Death Metal Scene

As of 2026-08-25, Florida Metal Index indexes 213 death metal bands statewide — more than any other single genre category we track in the state that gave the genre its name. But the most striking number in this dataset isn't the band count. It's what's missing: our show ledger currently shows zero logged death metal performances, even as 83% of these bands maintain active Bandcamp pages. That gap says less about whether the scene is alive and more about how it operates — recorded output first, live documentation a distant second, at least in what's been submitted to our index so far.

Tampa Still Leads, But It's Not a Monopoly

Florida death metal is inseparable from Tampa's history, and the current data backs that up — but not as overwhelmingly as the genre's reputation might suggest. Of the 213 bands in our index, 45 are based in Tampa, or about 21% of the total. That's a clear plurality, but it leaves nearly four out of five death metal bands based somewhere else in the state.

Orlando's 17 bands and Miami's 15 put both cities in a distant but real second tier, followed closely by Jacksonville's 13. Beyond the top four, the numbers thin out fast — Gainesville, Lakeland, Tallahassee, Fort Lauderdale, Ocala, and Sarasota each contribute between 5 and 7 bands. Combined, these ten cities account for 124 bands, or roughly 58% of the statewide total, meaning the remaining 42% is scattered across smaller markets not large enough individually to crack the top ten.

The Scene Is Younger Than the Legend

Florida death metal's origin story is a 1980s and early-1990s narrative — Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary, Deicide, all formed within a few years of each other in the Tampa Bay area. Our year-formed data shows that founding generation is now a small minority of the active scene. Only 2 currently-indexed bands trace back to the 1980s, and 13 more to the 1990s. Together, those two decades account for just 15 bands — 7% of the 213 total.

The real story is in the last two columns. Bands formed in the 2010s alone — 107 of them — make up exactly 50% of the entire indexed scene. Add the 70 bands formed in the 2020s and you get 177 bands, or 83% of all death metal acts in our database, founded within the last roughly 15 years. Florida death metal isn't a legacy genre coasting on its founding bands; by sheer volume, it's a scene that has been actively regenerating itself decade over decade, with the 2010s representing its single biggest growth period on record.

DIY Distribution Over Streaming Presence

Two platform metrics in our dataset point to how these bands present themselves online. Just 25% of the 213 bands have a linked Spotify presence, while 83% have a Bandcamp page. That's a wide gap, and it lines up with what's generally understood about extreme underground metal: Bandcamp's pay-what-you-want model and direct fan relationship remain the default distribution channel, while a formal Spotify presence — often requiring a distributor, aggregator, or label relationship — is something roughly three-quarters of bands in this genre haven't set up, at least based on what's linked in our index.

213 Bands, No Shows in the Ledger

Our database currently logs 0 shows tagged specifically as death metal, across a roster of 213 active or formerly active bands. That's not evidence the genre is dormant on stage — it's a reflection of what has and hasn't been submitted and tagged in our system as of this date. Florida's death metal scene runs through DIY shows, VFW halls, small clubs, and one-off bills that don't always get formally logged, and our show-tracking coverage for this genre is still catching up to our band-tracking coverage. We'd encourage bands and promoters to submit show data directly so this number reflects reality. In the meantime, check upcoming shows for what's currently on the calendar across all genres.

Methodology

This analysis is based on Florida Metal Index's internal database of bands, shows, and venues across the state of Florida, current as of 2026-08-25. Band counts, city breakdowns, year-formed data, and platform-presence percentages (Spotify and Bandcamp linkage) reflect information self-reported or verified within our index at the time of publication. Show counts reflect events tagged in our system as of this date and do not necessarily represent all live death metal activity in the state. These figures will change as more bands, shows, and venues are added to the index.
